Single, married, one night stand, rape. It makes no difference.
Nor does age, past or future or dreams or goals, who I was or who I want to be. All that matters is that I am pregnant and I have to make a decision, the hardest decision of my life.
This is not about when life begins. It is about personal choice. It is about personal protection. It is about self preservation.
edited excerpt from My name is Gail and I had an abortion
A recent comment made me revisit this article and the beginning caught me. I had forgotten the word "rape." Stranger rape, date rape, coworker rape, marital rape... What about incest, sodomy, accidents, sleep sex, drunk sex, sweet-talked sex and any other possible way that might result in pregnancy. Do we need to qualify reasons for abortion? Either a woman wants to carry to term or she doesn't. It should not matter HOW she got pregnant. There should be no qualification of "legitimate rape," as MO Sen. Akin put it, in order to get an abortion. It is a personal decision and a personal responsibility to make that decision. It is the decision of the living woman whose life will be most effected by the 9 months and lifetime after. It belongs to no senator, no judge (with the most extreme exceptions) no man in any position, and no woman who is not the woman in question. Right or wrong to you does not dictate right and wrong to her. One woman, one life, her decision.
