Between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday.  November 26, 2011, American Express and cities and towns around the US are encouraging shoppers to patronize the small Mom and Pop stores and boutiques in their area.  Instead of the crowds and surly or nonexistent customer service, you will find owners eager to help.  You will also find unique items not found in the big box stores.  It's well worth the search or even a drive out of town to find these smaller shops.  You will meet some really nice people, too.

Supporting local businesses is good for the community. Our business owners willingly support local schools, civic clubs, organizations and events throughout the year. For every $100 spent at a local store, $68 stays in the community, compared to $43 when you shop at a chain store. Small Business Saturday encourages consumers to think about where they spend their money and the impact that those dollars have.

I live in an area with nothing but small towns and small businesses and, of course, WalMart. We have the same hardware stores, flower shops groceries, and pharmacists that were here as long as 50 years ago. I do as much as I can with the small shops before I resort to WalMart. While they are a large employer, their profits are not spent or invested in the community.

Dr Know

All the small businesses have been harassed out of existence by the Franchise Tax Board. They do an intense audit on the small businesses that are not reporting the volume they think they should be. "Mom's Store" bought from the same "wholesale" stores that everyone has access to. They could not sell goods at the price they paid for things. People complained that the prices were too high. They only went to "Mom's" if they needed something NOW. They did not want to pay extra for the convenience. Mom's could only keep one gallon of milk because they never knew if it would sell or expire.

LOL There are lots of boutiques and specialty shops that are getting by and just need a boost. They quit carrying milk, though.
